One of the classic interview questions is something along the lines of: “Where do you see yourself in five years?”
The time frame may vary, of course, but the point is to elicit some sense of your future orientation and vision. In this advisory I’m suggesting you ask yourself the same question, not merely to zero in on where you’d like to be sometime in the future, but to set yourself up to take specific actions intended to maximize your chances of getting there.
Once you establish a clear picture of where you’d like to be and when you’d like to be there, you’ll find it much easier to work backwards from there to identify the specific steps you can take – starting now – to make your vision a reality.
If you take a few minutes once or twice a year to clarify and elaborate your vision for the future, and to fine-tune your plans about reaching those goals, you’ll be identifying important steps to up your game and improve your level of success in both your work and your life.
